Recently information and broadcasting minister Manish Tewari took a meeting in order to consult representatives of print and television industry on the issue of increasing FDI limits in the media sector.
Speaking to Millennium Post, former information and broadcasting secretary Uday Verma said that, 'We had a round of meetings with stakeholders from the print and broadcasting industry, where the issue of upping the limit for FDI in media was discussed. We have requested them to submit their views to us after which we will takeĀ a final call.'
'During the meeting we interacted with the representatives from the industry, where they expressed diverse viewpoints. Some of them were in favour of increasing the FDI limit from 26 pc to 49 pc while others rejected the idea. We have asked them to articulate their views and come to a consensus, after which they will submit their views to us and a final call will be taken by the ministry.'
Keeping in mind recommendations made by Mayaram committee, the govt is considering increasing FDI limit in several sectors. The panel, headed by department of economic affairs secretary Arvind Mayaram, had given in his suggestions saying that the limit should be increased from 26 pc to 49 pc in print media, FM Radio, uplinking news and current affairs channels and 100 percent in broadcasting carriage services and printing of specialised magazines and facsimile editions of foreign newspapers.
