Four out of eight youth died after drowning in the Yamuna canal in Outer Delhi’s Alipur village on Saturday afternoon. The deceased have been identified as, Ravi( 22), Budh Ram (19), Amit (18) and Vikas( 21).
According to the police, the incident took place at around 2.40 pm when the group of youth belonging to the same family, living in Tikri village, had gone to the Yamuna canal for swimming. The four who survived the fast current of the canal informed their family members and the police about the tragic incident.
After getting the information, a team of local police, boat club and fire brigade reached the spot. After more than three hours, they were able to fish out all the bodies from the river.
Police said that the bodies have been preserved for postmortem. Once post-mortem is done, they will be handed over to their relatives.
A case under Section 174 of IPC (suicide) has been registered at Alipur police station. The sections can be changed or new sections will be added after post-mortem depending on the report, added police.
According to the narration by one of the survivors to the cops, while swimming in the canal, they all started competing against each other as to who will cross the canal in the shortest possible time. While the first four members of the group reached the middle of the canal, the fast current of the canal swept them away, leaving the other four to launch desperate efforts to save their brothers’ lives.
However, the effort of the four who survived the swim couldn’t save the lives of their cousins, as the fast current of the canal took their bodies beyond reach.
It was only when a team of boat club personnel entered into the canal, and after an effort of three hours, they could find the bodies from the water body.
