Security has been tightened in Farrukhabad city in view of tomorrow’s India Against Corruption (IAC) rally against irregularities in External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid’s Dr Zakir Hussain Trust. The entire city has been converted into a fortress and security personnel have been deployed at all corners of the city to prevent any untoward incident.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Niladari Choudhury said security has been tightened in the city and all preventive measures have been made to avert any untoward incident. Temporary jails have been set up while several buses have been acquired to ferry the protestors in case of any violence. Several companies of PAC and additional police forces have been rushed from adjoining districts, he said.
In the rally the IAC activists would be wearing caps bearing the slogan Main Hoon Aam Admi and in retaliation, the Congress workers would have Salman Khurshid’s mask and caps with the slogan Main Salman Hoon.
District Congress has announced it would oppose the rally while Bharatiya Kisan Union’s (BKU) has declared it would prevent the Congressmen.
IAC leader Arvind Kejriwal is expected to reach Lucknow by Padmavat Express from Delhi tomorrow morning and will travel to Farrukhabad in a convoy along with other IAC activists like Kumar Viswas, Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh. IAC leaders Gopal Rai will reach Farrukhabad from Ghaziabad while Illias Azmi is already camping in Farrukhabad.
IAC activist in UP Sanjay Singh said the convoy of around 50 vehicles will start from Haj House near Amausi Airport in Lucknow at around 0630 hrs and after passing through Kanpur and Kannauj will reach Farrukhabad. Kejriwal will address the rally at around 1300 hrs at Lohia Park in Awas Vikas area of the district.
Meanwhile, a car rally under the leadership of Gopal Rai started from Ghaziabad on Wednesday and will reach Farrukahbad tomorrow morning.
On the eve of the IAC rally, Farrukhabad has been flooded with posters and banners carrying pictures of top IAC protestors. Almost all the important points of the district, including bus and railway stations, Chowk, Collectorate, Tehsil, Ghumna, Lal Darwaza, Bholeypur, Fatehgarh and Central Jail area, have been covered by these posters and banners. An IAC activist and convenor of Farrukahbad Laxman Singh on Wednesday said that local citizens and IAC volunteers are working day and night to make the rally a success. ‘We have formed various groups like campaign teams, security, drinking water, logistics, crowd management, sanitation, health, media and guest management team,’ he said .
Singh said, ‘We are expecting around 50,000 people to attend this rally and all arrangements have been made for them. We are also contacting people through social networking sites and have been sending out SMSes,’ he said.
On the other hand, the local unit of Congress has threatened to disrupt Kejriwal’s Farrukhabad rally. ‘Congressmen will storm the rally site and would not allow Arvind Kejriwal to address the people,’ said Punni Shukla, city president of the Congress Party in Farrukhabad.
