The fate of sitting MLA from Rajouri Garden, Dayanand Chandela, is the most critical. Chandela was denied a party ticket by the Congress this time because of several corruption charges against him. Chandela had managed to win in 2008 assembly elections with a thin margin of 64 votes against Avtar Singh Hit of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). This time the Congress fielded Dhanwati Chandela to nullify anti-incumbency, but BJP supported SAD candidate Manjinder Singh Sirsa has emerged a threat for Chandela’s political career which he wants to pursue through his wife. Class X pass Dhanwati is the least educated woman in the poll fray.
Another former MLA of Congress Ashok Singh is also burning the midnight oil for his wife Barkha Shukla Singh’s victory from RK Puram assembly segment for the second time. Singh, now a businessman, was denied a Congress ticket on almost same grounds but is active in the corridors of power as he managing the seat for his wife. ‘He is an active social worker so is contributing his bit in the election,’ said Barkha Singh.
Similarly, general secretary of Delhi Youth Congress Ashok Basoya, a practicing lawyer, is also campaigning for his wife Ragini Nayak who has been awarded ticket from Janakpuri assembly segment against BJP’s heavyweight Jagdish Mukhi who has never lost since 1983. The couple has been in politics since college days and were elected president and vice-president of Delhi University Students’ Union, respectively.
Delhi University professor Bharat Bhushan has taken a leave to support his wife and former Delhi mayor Rajni Abbi, who has been given ticket from Timarpur by the BJP. ‘I have been supporting her in all her elections,’ said Bhushan. Bhushan is also a social activist and has been on various posts in ABVP and BJP.
Similarly, Delhi BJP general secretary Shikha Rai’s husband Sajeev Kumar Pabbi has also taken a break from work. He is a senior Supreme Court lawyer and also additional advocate general of Punjab government.
Shajid Siraj Malik is accompanying his wife Shazia Ilmi on the campaign trail. Shazia is contesting from RK Puram on the Aam Aadmi Party ticket. Congress’ Anita Dhawan (28) former DUSU president is the only unmarried woman in the fray from Tilak Nagar.
