The Delhi Police Crime Branch busted a fake call centre operating in Mayur Vihar Phase -I, which allegedly cheated people of around Rs 1 crore by offering fake insurance policies with lucrative tour packages.
Two persons identified as Amit Sharma (28) and Ajeet Thakur (22) have been arrested, while their accomplice Kishan Pal Singh is on the run, police said. The police found a full-fledged functional call centre and recovered 20 walky-talkies, a laptop, cheques of two prominent banks and fake sim cards.
The police stsrted investigation into the case after one Champak Lal, a resident of Gujarat, filed a complaint that some people running a call centre had duped him of Rs 24.7 lakh, promising to restore his insurance policy that had lapsed.
The police scanned the call details of the accused persons to identify their location, which was traced to Mayur Vihar Phase -I. A raid was conducted and the two accused were arrested.
During interrogation, the accused revealed that the call centre was owned by Kishan Pal and around 25 people used to work there as telecallers. They allegedly used to obtain numbers of the victims through a BSNL directory and were instructed to call on the assigned telephone numbers. A typed script was also provided to them by Kishan Pal and Amit so that they could strike a conversation with the victims, police said.
The addresses and bank account numbers for depositing cash/cheques were given by Kishan Pal and Amit directly from their phones. The victims were asked to deliver cheques or deposit cash/cheque in various bank accounts which were also being opened on fake IDs. They preferred targeting victims from remote areas in Gujarat so that they are not traced. It is further revealed that they have been running this call centre for the past six months.
