Fake ‘army major’ arrested for cheating women on pretext on marriage

The accused, identified as Kislay Thakur, used to even change his name and religion to cheat people. Hailing from an Army family, he used his knowledge of the force to impress and convince people that he was a Major. Thakur, a resident of Amritsar, was arrested from Gurgaon by the staff of Janak Puri Police Station of West Delhi on Saturday on complaint of one Syed Rizwan Ahmed.

Ahmed had filed a complaint with police on 10 June alleging that while searching a suitable groom for his sister, he came in contact with a man, who identified himself as Major Ashiq Bashir, a resident of Bangalore and posted in Leh-Ladakh region of Military Intelligence Unit of Indian Army through a matrimonial website.

‘Bashir duped him of Rs 5,95,000 on pretext of booking a Renault Duster car for the marriage. Bashir lured him by saying that he will book this vehicle through Army quota where he will get 50 per cent discount,’ said Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Ranvir Singh.

Ahmed fell into his trap after which Bashir asked him to deposit Rs 3,45,000 in the account of one Kislay Thakur saying Thakur was his friend and somehow he cannot get the money deposited in his own account, police said.

On 2 June, Ahmed transferred the money in the specified account. Bashir again convinced him to deposit further Rs 2,50,000 for the purchase of the vehicle, which he obeyed.

‘However, on inquiry, Ahmed found that there is no officer by this name, posted in Military Intelligence unit at Leh-Ladakh unit following which an FIR was registered at Janak Puri police station and investigation was taken up,’ said Singh. Police then decided to beat the accused at his own game and hatched a plan to trap him. Bashir was convinced that he would be paid the remaining demanded amount following which he came to receive the money at Gurgoan where he was arrested.
