Eighteen students were expelled from Delhi University’s Shaheed Bhagat Singh College after it was found that they had submitted forged documents to get admissions. The decision was taken in a College Staff Council meet on Wednesday.
The matter came to light after the admission audit committee of the college listed out names of 18 students who had secured admission in 2012-13 with the help of fake caste certificates and marksheets.
Out of the 18 students, nine are from BCom (Hons), seven in BCom (Pass) and one each in BA (Hons) Economics and BA (Programme). The college has also filed an FIR against the students.
PK Khurana, principal of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College said, ‘These students had submitted false caste certificates and marksheets to get admission in the college. Most of them were duped by touts who promised them admissions under management quota.’
He also informed that his college has no management quota for admission and advised the parents of aspirants not to fall prey to touts.
Earlier in March, the college had cancelled admission of 18 first year students for producing fake certificates. Taking a cue from there, the college conducted an audit of its old records to find out more such cases. As a result, it was found that 18 students who got admitted in 2012-13 had produced fake caste certificates.
The issue of fake admissions has plagued the university for a long time now. In the past, fake admissions have been reported from many of DU’s well known colleges like Ramjas College, Kirorimal College, Venketeshwara College and Satyawati College.
In most of the cases it has been observed that fake caste certificates are a common means to get admission into Delhi University. The reason being, ‘fake caste certificates are less likely to be detected as compared to marksheets’, said a forensic expert not wishing to be named.
After the fake admission cases were reported in Ramjas College in 2011, it started appointing forensic officers during the admission process to cross-check the authenticity of the certificates.
