Factory fire: Four minors among five suffocated to death

The victims were identified as Shravan Kumar (17), Niranjan (5), Nilesh (11), Vipin (26) and Shivam (15). ‘All the five victims were choked by the smoke which filled up the factory room, in which they were sleeping,’ said a fire official. He further said, there were no emergency exits in the unit, which could have saved their lives.
Shivam was referred to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, where he died around 10 am. The other four victims were rushed to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where they were declared brought dead.

As many as 18 people used to worked in the factory. They used to sleep in one of the two rooms in the factory. On Sunday night, all of them went to sleep at around 12 am. At around 3 am, they noticed fire smell and emptied the room.
Apart from the five victims, all the workers were rescued by fire officials who, reportedly reached the spot on time. ‘The five victims had inhaled too much of smoke by the time they could be rescued’, said a police officer.
Meanwhile, their bodies were sent for postmortem examination. ‘Conclusions can be drawn only after the report is received,’ the officer added. The factory owner, identified as Pintu Shah was at his rented accommodation, a few blocks away from the factory, when the incident took place.
Five-year-old Niranjan was Pintu’s son, who used to sleep with his cousins occasionally. It has also been found out that most of them were employed at the factory.
A case under section 304A (causing death due to negligence) has been registered in this regard and further investigations are on, said a police official.
