Mobile phone subscribers were surprised to receive pre-recorded calls from Sibal soon after announcing to them that he was their MP from Chandni Chowk and that he may have erred in not having remained in contact with them for sometime due to his pre-occupation with ministerial work.
Sibal is said to be mulling a Twitter handle and also an updated personal website. The move comes in the wake of his rivals from Delhi politics like Congress media department head Ajay Maken taking pains to explain ‘what made Rahul Gandhi act against the law drafted and publicly defended by Sibal to protect the convicted public representatives.’ The fact that Gandhi decried the law has been enough to create the crisis of confidence in the leader.
Observers were initially surprised - why the call from the minister this time when the elections for Lok Sabha is still about six months away. On the other hand, Delhi is in the midst of a keen contest for the state assembly and Sibal has no direct role in these elections.
Nonetheless, his calls in the midst of ‘grim reminders’ issued by the pre-recorded calls of Arvind Kejriwal of Aam Aadmi Party has come as a big relief to subscribers. The contents of the calls are hilarious as Sibal goes on to inform the listeners that he is rather adept at writing poetry and that his verses have been picked by Bollywood and that even a music album is coming out. The second call says he wants to be accessible and responsive to his constituents, leaving one to wonder whether he was preparing for political wilderness.
