Eye on polls, govt hikes salaries of Wakf Board Imams, Muezzins

With an eye on the Delhi Assembly polls scheduled for November, 2013, the Delhi government has given the nod to hike a monthly increment to Delhi Waqf Board's associated mosques Imams and Muezzins. Delhi Waqf Board has made a proposal to hike salaries of Imams and Muezzins. The Delhi government has decided to hike their salaries with immediate effect to Rs 10,000 and Rs 9,000 per month. Presently, a Waqf board Imam gets Rs 6,220, whereas a Muezzin draws Rs 5,022 per month.

Delhi Wakf Board chairman Chaudhary Mateen Ahmad confirmed that after meeting the Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit , the salary of all Wakf Board's associated Mosques Imams and Muezzins were raised with immediate effect.

Chaudhary also referred to the Supreme Court's order of 1993 in which the court had ordered that Masjid Imams and Muezzins should be treated as government employees and hence their category and pay scale should be fixed. Ahmed further said that during his chairmanship of the Waqf Board, the salaries of Imams have been increased two-fold. At one point, their salaries were around Rs.1000 per month which has increased to Rs 6000 and those of Muezzins were increased to Rs 5000', added Chaudhary Mateen.
