Eye on elections, govt hikes salaries for language teachers

The Congress-led Delhi government, riding high on the popularity gained from hiking the monthly remuneration of teachers deployed by language academies in government schools in 2008, is attempting to repeat the success formula ahead of the polls due in November 2013.

The Delhi Cabinet on Monday decided to hike the monthly remuneration of teachers deployed by language academies in government schools. It also approved retention of government accommodation by retired teachers for two years. The decisions were taken at a Cabinet meeting presided over by the Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Dikshit stated that the city government had deployed Urdu, Punjabi and Sanskrit teachers from language academies in schools under the Directorate of Education, as a part of a language development programme.

The Chief Minister said the teachers had been engaged on part-time basis against the vacancies in sanctioned posts and in 2008 they were given permanent jobs.

Their consolidated monthly remuneration had been increased in July 2002, April 2005 and April 2007, while they had been engaged on part-time basis.

Prior to the  2008 Delhi Assembly polls, the state  government in July 2008, had further hiked their emoluments consequent upon making them full-time language teachers, against vacant sanctioned posts on consolidated monthly remuneration.

The new remuneration for post graduate teachers (PGT) was fixed at Rs 13,160 and for trained graduate teachers (TGT) Rs 11,140.

The cabinet has now decided to hike consolidated remuneration with immediate effect to Rs 23,265 and Rs 22,935 respectively.

With this hike, the monthly consolidated remuneration of 282 teachers will be more than doubled.

The Chief Minister also stated that the Cabinet has decided to allow the retention of government accommodation for two years for all retired teachers up to PGT level and vice-principals and  principals till they are re-employed. Dikshit stated that the basis of the decision is that these teachers are being re-employed automatically for two years after their superannuation from government service and they cannot be treated as on contract basis. It is expected that the decision would solve some of their problems.
