The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has decided to hire the services of National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Pune, to develop the lake at Welcome Colony as a tourist destination. NEERI, in its presentation recently, demonstrated phyto-treatment technology to treat drain water by planting some special plants in a specially designed system.
‘NEERI has presented the technology to treat dirty and waste water of municipal drains with the help of floating plants planted in a specially designed drainage system. The water will also be used to water other plants,’ said S S Yadav, Commissioner of EDMC. The lake famous, as Jheel in east Delhi, is spread over 32 acres of land and is now neglected due to inflow of sewage and dirty water of drains from nearby colonies. The water body had dried up.
‘NEERI is preparing the complete model for development of the park including landscape, greenery, recreation centre, kiosks, and playground for children,’ added Yadav. The Jheel will be made deeper and revived under the plan.
‘We will provide every facility to develop it as a model picnic spot and tourist centre in east Delhi. In future more parks would be developed on this pattern with the help of NEERI,’ said Yadav.
