Expressway accidents: Ban on heavy vehicles during peak hours soon

The DM has also come down heavily on the errant drivers and has directed to send challans immediately to the residence of the traffic violators. In a meeting with SP (rural) Brijesh Kumar Singh, Noida Depot regional transport officer RK Johri, Gautam Budh Nagar district magistrate HL Gupta discussed the important measures to reduce accidents on the expressways.

‘As cases of accidents are on rise, we have ordered the police and traffic department to identify the sensitive spots and increase patrolling at these places. We have asked police to send challans to those who break traffic rules and cross speed limits on the expressways and within a certain time period, they will have to pay the fine,’ Gupta said.

The district magistrate has directed the district administration, city police, Noida Authority and Transport Department to earmark no-entry zones and accident prone spots on both expressways within a week. He has also ordered police and Jaypee Group for video recording of these roads so that the footage can be used to identify the traffic violator.

Dharmendra Yadav, traffic inspector, Gautam Budh Nagar said that more cameras will be installed so that the number plate of vehicles could be captured. ‘We will use the video footage to find out the traffic offenders and the details of their vehicles. We will then send a challan to their homes. Before there was on the spot challan but only few could be fined but now we can punish all the traffic violators,’ Yadav said.

According to the data provided by the district administration, 384 persons were killed while 634 were injured in 874 road accidents in 2013. In the last one month, seven major accidents were reported due to fog on the Yamuna Expressway in which 30 were killed and over 50 injured.
