The incident happened when he tried to foil a smuggling bid of illicit liquor, an official said on Monday. On the other hand, the police have rejected the excise department’s version saying, Varun Singh was attacked in a marriage ceremony and not by the liquor mafia.
Singh was patrolling at around 10:30 pm at Shihani Gate’s Morta area of Ghaziabad at NH58. He intercepted a truck reportedly full of illicit liquor and was questioning the driver.
Suddenly, a WagonR with three people on-board, that was apparently following the truck, appeared at the scene. The occupants of the car fired at him and injured him with a motive to kill, officials said.
He sustained bullet injuries in his leg. Singh informed his colleagues who admitted him at ICU in a private hospital where he is now said to be out of danger. The police have registered a case but still not identified the persons involved in the firing.
“Varun Singh has sustained bullet injuries on his right leg which has been removed after surgery. Although the patient has been kept under observation, he is out of danger,” said an official of the hospital.
However, contradicting the excise department’s version, Inspector Ashok Sisodia of the Sihani Gate police station claimed that the incident did not involve the liquor mafia but Singh was injured in a firing in a marriage ceremony.
“We have registered a case and we are further probing the attack on Varun Singh. The incident took place in his jurisdiction but he was not on patrol. He was attending a wedding, where he sustained gunshot injuries,” said the police official.
