The BJP is all set to revive the Uniform Civil Code issue at the national level. The Centre has asked the Law Commission to examine the issue of implementing the Code and has asked it to submit the report as soon as possible. However, observers feel that it is a well thought-out of strategy ahead of the UP polls.
However, the BJP officially doesn’t accept the fact. The party says, “It was always part of their agenda.” According to sources, the party is going to give a big push to the long debated issue, after bringing it out from the cold storage.
In many cases, the caste-based political equations are stronger than religious equations. To control this caste equation, BJP leaders feel that the issue of Uniform Civil Code would touch the entire Hindu community.
The pros and cons of the implementation of code have often been argued as India is a secular, democratic republic and its Constitution guarantees minorities the right to follow their own religion, culture and customs, implementing a common code of personal laws covering property, marriage, divorce, inheritance and succession would go against India's secular fabric.
