Nepal has been reduced to shambles after last Saturday’s powerful quake. The ravaged Himalayan nation, once a tourist hotspot, has drawn the attention of the world, especially the neighbouring India which has been carrying out relief and rescue operations on a large scale.
Ex-servicemen in Uttarakhand, too, plan to do their bit to help revive residents of the shaken country. On May 10, they plan to organise an event to raise funds for the quake victims.
“At this crucial hour when disaster-hit Nepalese are waiting for help, we must unite and help them in all possible way. Indian Idol 4 finalist Kapil Thapa has confirmed to perform in the event. All funds raised through this musical night will be donated to quake victims in Nepal,” said Lt Col (retd) BS Chhettri, president of Gorkhali Sudhar Sabha, on Wednesday.
He said 8-10 lakh Gorkhalis live in Uttarakhand and they are donating whole-heartedly for the quake victims. Mussorrie MLA Ganesh Joshi will donate 250 blankets for the victims.
Lt Gen (retd) RS Pradhan said it will take years for the people of Nepal to recover from the trauma. Tourism is the country’s backbone and it has been severely hit. Prices of essential commodities have escalated in the country.
Brigadier (retd) PS Gurung who is well-versed with Nepal’s geography said, “We are planning to send essential items such as tents, rice, flour, medical kits and water bottles to interior areas in Nepal. We
have also contacted the Nepal embassy in New Delhi. Our volunteers will reach Nepal in a week.”
