Employees’ State Insurance Corporation  (ESIC) has started an ambitious programme for the modernisation of its hospitals and dispensaries. The programme is aimed at adapting with the changing health delivery scenario in the country and ensure that government employees get world class health infrastructure and facilities.

The company has constructed two ESI Dispensaries at Perinad and Poruvazhy. These are three-doctor dispensaries built according to the norms of the Medical Council of India (MCI). The total project cost of the Perinad dispensary is Rs. 2.16 crore while that of the Poruvazhy dispensary is Rs. 2.23 crore. Over 14,113 insured persons are associated with these two ESI dispensaries.

Lok Sabha MP N Peethambara Kurup, Kerala MLA Kovoor Kunjumon, ESIC Member K Suresh Babu, ESIC Director-General A K Agarwal and presidents and members of the district, block and panchayats of Perinad and Poruvazhy were present on the occasion.  The ESI Scheme was first implemented in Kerala in September 1956 and today 29,000 factories and establishments, involving 6.25 lakh employees are covered under the ESI Act.  The total number of beneficiaries in the state is about 25 lakh.  To provide super-speciality treatment to insured persons, the Corporation has entered into a tie-up for providing cashless treatment with 68 Hospitals. The ESI Act applies to any premises or precincts where 10 or more persons are employed.

Employees drawing wages up to Rs 15,000 a month are entitled to health insurance cover and other benefits under the ESI Act.  Keeping pace with the pace of Indias's industrialisation, the Scheme today is being implemented at 807 centers in 29 states and union territories.  The Act now applies to over 5.8 lakh factories and establishments across the country, benefiting 1.71 crore family units of workers.  Till date, the total beneficiary population of the ESI Scheme is 6.63 crore.
