SIC runs the ESI Scheme, a self-financing scheme providing social security with medical care and payment of cash benefit against loss of earning capacity due to employment injury, death, unemployment etc. to the working class in the organised sector.
On this day in the year 1952, the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru inaugurated the ESI Scheme at Kanpur. The venue was the Brijender Swarup Park and Pandit ji addressed a 70,000 strong gathering in Hindi. In his inaugural address he said, ‘The Scheme which I am inaugurating today is a step in the right direction. However, I would like to add that we should not become complacent. We should not be fearful of any dangers but the situation in this world is that there are wild animals in the guise of human beings whom we have to confront.’
Others who were present on that historic day and addressed the crowd were Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Gobind Ballabh Pant, Union Labour Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram, Union Health Minister Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur, Union Food Minister Chandrabhan Gupt and the first ESIC Director-General, Dr C L Katial. The Scheme was simultaneously launched at Delhi as well and the
initial coverage for both the centres was 1,20,000 employees.
Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was the first honorary insured person of the scheme and the declaration form bearing his signature is a prized possession of the Corporation. The Kanpur edition of Dainik Jagran dated 25 February, 1952 carried the above news with the caption ‘Prime Minister Inaugurates Employees State Insurance Scheme, an unprecedented Scheme in whole of Asia call for co-operation in development of the nation.’
