Errant truck driver kills cop, one more after police ask him to stop

Two persons including a Delhi Police constable died and two others were injured as a speeding truck rammed into a police picket and hit three cars in the RK Puram area of South Delhi, in the wee hours of Thursday.
Police said that the truck heading from Faridabad (Haryana) to Narayana crushed constable Dipak (36) and also hit a car that he had stopped for verifying papers causing death of one of the three occupants in the car, at 12.50 am on Thursday.
The incident occurred near RK Khanna stadium as the truck loaded with cables coming from Africa Avenue did not stop at the police barricade raised by RK Puram police station staff for checking vehicles.
It first hit a car and then crushed Dipak while hitting the other car he had stopped for checking papers and sped away towards Vasant Vihar, said a senior police officer.
Dipak had joined Delhi Police in 2000 on compassionate ground following the on duty death of his father who also served in the force. The other victim was identified as 32-year-old Assam native Santosh Borah. Two other occupants of the car A Sura (31) from Mizoram and Esther Pongen (21), from Nagaland, who were injured in the accident were rushed to a hospital from where they were discharged after treatment, said the officer.
The truck driver did not stop the vehicle after the accident and sped ahead hitting another car damaging it badly near Hyatt hotel on the Ring Road. Later, he fled away from there leaving behind the truck.
Police confiscated the truck and caught its cleaner Rahul. The accused truck driver has been identified by the police as a Hardoi (UP) resident Ram Kishan and several teams have been trying to arrest him at the earliest, he said. The deceased constable who hailed from Panipat in Haryana is
survived by his wife and a 15-year-old daughter and 12-year-old son who live at Palam Gaon.
