Say Yamla Pagla Deewana and this madcap comedy instantly makes you chuckle. You would have to be living under a rock to be unaware of the popularity of the franchise that had Dharmendra and his sons, Sunny and Bobby Deol, in lead roles. After Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011) garnered immense success at the box office and appreciation from the audience, the Deols came up with the second instalment, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2. Unfortunately, the sequel did not really live up to the first instalment, so the trio now promises three times the fun in their third instalment, Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se.
While there has been plenty of buzz around the film, especially after the shoot began in August 2017, Box Office India got an exclusive opportunity to visit the sets of Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se, to catch up with the actors.
Taking a tour inside the studio, we discovered the streets of Gujarat. Yes, with a set that realistic, you were instantly transported to small-town Gujarat. Right from the houses to the street vendors selling theplas and gathiya, it couldn't get more real.
Keeping details of the scenes under wraps, an executive from the production house offers us a tidbit. Yes, the iconic bike which Bobby Deol used to recreate the Sholay pose with his father Dharmendra, will make an appearance in an all-new avatar. Wait and watch!
Sadly, we couldn't speak to Sunny Deol, who was on the set shooting for a scene, but we did meet the other brother, who was dressed in a simple T-shirt and jeans – the suave Bobby Deol. He assured us that they would bring back all the madness in Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se.
"The first instalment was a lot of fun, the second instalment wasn't so much fun but we are working very hard on the scripting and trying our best to make you all love this film more than the first film. So far, so good. Everything is shaping up the way it should. Fingers crossed," he says.
Bobby has no qualms or apprehension about doing back-to-back comedy films. In fact, he's happy with the way things are turning out for him. "The scripts that have come to me of late are of comedy films and they are quite funny. Like Poster Boys was funny and I enjoyed doing that. YPD is going to be more stylised and it is going to be larger than life," he assures.
Yamla Pagla Deewana is like family coming together, to which Bobby says, "It is always special to work with bhaiyya and papa, and it is great fun. The comfort level we have and the chemistry show on screen. I am just too excited and I wish I could do more films with my dad."
We've heard about Bobby being a prankster on the sets, from his co-stars, to which the actor nonchalantly says, "It is nothing like that. I think we are very chilled-out people, we don't really play pranks. Everyone has their own sense of humour. Otherwise, it is just one happy family!"
Asked about comparisons with the previous instalments, Bobby believes the audience swears by trends that are 'in'. "I don't think the audience will draw any kind of comparison. The trend of sequels is so common now that no one compares the present one with the others. A good film always works, it doesn't really matter if it is a sequel or not. Sure, a sequel has a lot of anticipation and intrigue, and since people are fascinated with them, they just want to go and watch them. But, in the end, it is a good subject that makes a film work," he says.
With every successive film in his kitty, Bobby beams with confidence. "I think I expect the best from every film of mine. And that is exactly what I expect from this film, too."
The latest addition to the YPD team, the beautiful and talented Kriti Kharbanda, has created quite a buzz. On the sets, Kharbanda is bubbling with excitement. "It's just incredible, to be honest. The energy on the set is really high and I think it is because of the big Punjabi crew. Most of them are Punjabis in some way or the other," she says.
Like any other heroine, Kharbanda too cannot stop gushing about her 'golden' moment – working with the legendary Dharmendra. "The biggest golden moment for me was when I shared screen time with Dharam sir. It is something I had never imagined. Chupke Chupke is my favourite film and I can't even count the number of times I have watched it! He is so warm and we get along so well."
It's not only Dharmendra; Kharbanda shares the same energy levels with her other co-stars as well. "Bobby is a house on fire, he loves to party and do his own thing. He is so much fun on the set. Sunny sir is the serious, sweet, older brother. He is extremely protective about everybody, whether the director, the cameraman, or all of them. The crew makes me feel as if I am at home," she says.
Talking about privileges on the set, she adds, "They pamper me and I get a lot of attention since I am the only girl on the set."
Finally, the actor lets the cat out of the bag about Bobby being the biggest prankster on the sets! "I think it is Bobby, it has to be Bobby. He is one of those people whose pranks are not practical pranks; his pranks are more vocal. He has fooled me many times and hoaxed me into giving a shot. And I have gone and done it! Then, when the director asks me what am I doing, I am baffled. I am like, 'Oh God, I fell for this again!' That's how it is. He does it so well, you don't know when he is playing a prank. One never knows whether to believe him or not."
Capture comedy is a serious business and Kharbanda is using every trick in the book to come up with the best. "I don't prepare for my roles so that I come off natural. But the best thing to do is prepare a backstory of the character. I play Chiku in the film, who is an ENT surgeon in the film. As part of my preparation, I made regular visits to the ENT as I constantly had a cold. In fact, I have a cold even as I speak to you now! It is something I can relate to on a personal level," she avers.
"I try and follow the director as much as possible. This film is about lives coming together, it doesn't have much to do about who plays what role. It is about the story, the script. I have done my homework in terms of writing a background of Chiku for myself. Chiku is the kind of girl who loves balloons. She is the kind of girl who believes in hard work. She is the kind of girl who wants to strive to make a difference in her life and her parents' lives. She doesn't care what the world thinks. She is not here to make the world a better place; she wants to give her mom a good life. I go through all these emotions before I start shooting."
It is all about positive vibes for Kharbanda, and it is definitely three times the fun. "I hope it will turn out to be three times the fun, also three is my lucky number. So I feel it will work out for us. It is not just a film with fun. It is not slapstick comedy that we are doing. It is situational comedy and it is very much in the moment. It is very dialogue-based and not just gestures and all that. It is about how you say your lines, and what you say at the right time. Also, it has a lot of drama and not just comedy. . And I think a part of me is happy that the film is dramatic too."First two installments of Yamla Pagla Deewana franchise garnered immense success at the box office, and now, Deols are once again coming together to bring three times the fun in its third part, Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se
