Grateful to have a mentor as Suneel Darshan: Upen

Bollywood hunk, Upen Patel shares his experience working with director Suneel Darshan for Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha, his choice of films, and his best performance. Agreeing to be a momma's boy, Upen speaks how EHTEDT has been his most honest performance. The film is set to release this Friday.
On what grounds do you choose your films?

There's only one ground, the story has to be good. There has to be something I enjoy reading on paper. It's very important for the character to have a graph. I look for something that I believe I can do, that the audience will like. I wait for the kind of films in which the audience will like my character.
What was so intriguing about 'Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha' (EHTEDT)?

I liked the script of 'Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha' for it is a complete commercial movie and our music director, Nadeem sir was making a comeback with this film. There's a romantic triangle here, this is a very emotional film, and it has the hardest character I have ever played.

It was difficult yet amazing, for it is a romantic mystery and my character tries his best to keep everyone happy overlooking his own happiness. This sort of character catches up with you... I'm glad that I got a chance to do this and learn so much more about myself as an actor.

This has also been my most honest film, because har scene me maine har ek emotion ko mehsoon kiya hai.
Watching the trailer, one can identify a supernatural element in the movie... Could you give us an insight into it?

There's a supernatural element in the movie, but it's a very important part of the film, it's more like a touch-and-go element. It's based on a story... but I cannot disclose the mystery now, you've to wait for the film to release.
You've worked with Suneel Darshan before in 'Shakalaka Boom Boom', how was the experience working with the director again ?

It's an honour to work with a director of his calibre. He's worked with some of the best artistes of the country like Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra and Lara Dutta... It's overwhelming that you've a director who believes in you as an actor/ performer. I'm very grateful to have a mentor as Suneel Darshan and I would love to work with him in his next projects as well.
Would you like to share any memorable incident during the shooting of the film?

It was freezing... I was so involved in my character. I just remember it being a hard shoot. Even though the location was beautiful, I was so focused on my character, that I could barely enjoy the scenic beauty.
Which movie do you think you have performed the best?

I think Shakalaka was my best as a performer. Even though the movie did not do well, I received a lot of critical praise so I'd go with Shakalaka as my best performance. And my most honest performance had been Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha.

The film is directed and produced by Suneel Darshan and stars Shiv Darshan, Natasha Fernandez and Upen Patel in lead roles.
