Hardening the stand on cleaning of Ganga river, union water resources minister and vice chairman of National Ganga River Basin Authority Uma Bharti on Wednesday directed its officials to initiate steps to stop the flow of ‘even a single drop of toilets and sewage into the important river’.
Bharti, who made a surprise visit to newly inducted rural development minister Chaudhary Birender
Singh, asked Singh to provide grant for the Ganga rejuvenation drive.
Later, Bharti also called on secretary of the department and directed him to work in tandem with five states through which Ganga passes in controlling the flow of human waste into the river. The brief meet discussed that there are about 7,900 villages located on the banks of Ganga and toilets and sewage of these villages flow into the river making it densely polluted.
The union minister, while issuing tough directions, asked chief ministers of the five states to take necessary measures to control the flow of toilets in the river.
The minister is going to issue guidelines to states in this regard soon asking them to take stringent measures to check the ill practices. Bharti was adamant that whatever may be the consequences, but not even a single drop of human waste should be dropped into the Ganga.
