England face tough away test at Ukraine
A lack of available forward players means England will be forced to rely upon a makeshift attacking configuration in Tuesday’s pivotal World Cup qualifier against Ukraine in Kiev. Friday’s breezy 4-0 win over Moldova elevated Roy Hodgson’s side to the top of European qualifying Group H, but a booking for Danny Welbeck ruled the Manchester United forward out of Tuesday’s game.
Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge was subsequently ruled out due to a thigh strain, and with Wayne Rooney and Andy Carroll currently injured, it leaves Hodgson with a quandary at the sharp end of the pitch.
Rickie Lambert is expected to lead the line after scoring and laying on two goals for Welbeck against Moldova. The importance of the game means that James Milner is set to replace Welbeck, with Hodgson having lauded the Manchester City midfielder’s defensive qualities after the game against Moldova.
“We know what James can do,” the England manager said. “James isn’t and doesn’t pretend to be as exciting as some of the wingers we sometimes use these days. “But the game in Kiev is going to be a game where we’re going to need the experience, we’re going to need the strength, we’re going to need the quality.
Win, and England will move three points clear at the top of the group, ahead of the home games against Montenegro and Poland.
England’s experience can aid World Cup bid: frank Lampard
KYIV: Frank Lampard believes the wealth of experience amassed by England’s three centurions will play a key role in their country’s bid to qualify for the World Cup. England could field three players with 100 caps in the same team for the first time in their history if boss Roy Hodgson selects Chelsea midfielder Lampard for qualifier against Ukraine.
Lampard, 35, made his 99th senior international appearance in Friday’s 4-0 win over Moldova and seems certain to start in Kiev alongside fellow centurions Steven Gerrard, 33, and Ashley Cole, 32.
With that trio on the field, Lampard is certain Group H leaders England -- who are one point clear of third placed Ukraine -- will have the experience to deal with the intense atmosphere of a high-stakes encounter. “We hope to use that experience,” Lampard said. “Steven and Ashley have been great servants for club and country and if I can join them it will be great. “But more importantly, the three of us need to bring that experience to the table and show that we can get the right result.”
