Ravindra Jain, the veteran music composer, who passed away in Mumbai on Friday, was probably one of the best ambassadors for people with special abilities. Jain overcame blindness to become one of the most successful composers of his time giving super hit music for films like ‘Chor Machaye Shor’, ‘Geet Gaata Chal’, ‘Chitchor’ and ‘Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se’, in the 70s.
He was elevated to the premium slot among the composers when showman Raj Kapoor gave him break in ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’, and the rest is history. For the RK <g data-gr-id="86">banner</g> he went <g data-gr-id="58">onto</g> <g data-gr-id="84">give</g> music for equally successful ‘Heena’, which was directed by showman’s son Randhir Kapoor. Despite the handicap, Jain excelled not just with the baton composing songs but also the quill writing some of the finest lyrics.
He thrice won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director ‘Chitchor’ in 1976, ‘Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se’ in 1978 and ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ in 1985. He is probably the only one in Bollywood to have won the Filmfare award both for music and lyrics.
He got the best lyricist and music award in 1978 for ‘Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se’. He was nominated for lyrics in 1991 for “Main Hoon <g data-gr-id="64">Khusrang</g>” for Heena.
During the 1970s when the Rajshri Productions was providing a counter to Amitabh Bachchan’s angry young man stereotypes with wholesome family entertainers, Ravindra Jain came out with melodious compositions in one film after another – Geet Gata <g data-gr-id="62">Chaal</g>, Chitchor, <g data-gr-id="63">Ankhion</g> Ke Jharokhon Se, and Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaye among others.
In these films Jain introduced Malayali singing sensation Dr KJ Yesudas together they topped the charts with memorable songs like ‘Oo <g data-gr-id="60">goriya</g> re’ (Naiyya) and ‘Gori <g data-gr-id="61">tera</g> gaon’ Chitchor. Yesudas was instrumental Jain’s success story. Jain no wonder had described Yesudas as the ‘Voice of India’. On <g data-gr-id="82">television</g> he gain huge success with Ramanand Sagar’s ‘Ramayan’.
Jain breathed his last at 4.10 pm at Lilavati hospital due to multiple organ <g data-gr-id="75">failure</g>. He was shifted from Wockhardt Hospital in Nagpur few days back to Mumbai for treatment at Lilavati Hospital in Bandra. The music composer was suffering from a urinary infection causing a problem in his kidney.
He was in Nagpur for a concert on Sunday, but could not participate because of his ill-health and was subsequently airlifted to Mumbai. He was kept in the ICU at Lilavati and was on <g data-gr-id="73">ventilator</g>.
