The life of hundreds of residents of an apartment in Vasundhara came to a standstill this weekend as thieves took away expensive electronic devices from all the seven lifts installed in the apartment complex. According to the secretary of the managing committee of the society, a single piece of the device costs over Rs 2.5 lakh.
'Senior citizens are facing major problems and we have to deploy our staff to provide milk, vegetables and other daily use items in their flats,' said Dev Kumar, secretary of managing committee of Swarna Ganga Apartment.
The apartment comes under the jurisdiction of Uttar Pradesh Housing and Development Board which has a provision of managing committee in place of resident welfare society (RWA). There are 119 flats in seven blocks of seven floors each.
The incident was reported on Saturday morning when residents found that all the seven lifts installed in the seven blocks of the society were jammed. 'We called up an electrician to examine the lifts who told us that the L-7 electronic device which is considered to be the brain of the lift was missing from all the seven lifts,' said Kumar. The members of the management committee then lodged a police complaint in Indirapuram police station in Ghaziabad.
'We approached several big shops in Ghaziabad and Delhi and even called up service center of OTIS group to fit new L-7 devices in the lifts. But they could not arrange it on Saturday. OTIS personnel have assured us to provide us two devices by Sunday evening and two more on Monday,' added Kumar. The market value of an seven floor OTIS lift is around Rs 20 lakh of but an L-7 device costs over Rs 2.5 lakh.
'We have registered a case and matter is being investigated. There seems to be involvement of some insider or guard,' said S S Yadav, SP City of Ghaziabad.
According to the police, there have been some instances of theft of the costly devices from lifts in the past but never on such scale.
