In an attempt to de-congest Delhi, the union urban development ministry on Friday announced construction of over 150 kilometres of elevated urban extension roads [UER]. The Delhi Development Authority [DDA] has planned three urban extension roads, which will encircle the city and provide connectivity to various places within the city.
Â
As of now National Highway 1, National Highway 2 and National Highway 8 cover long distances within the city before moving out and slowing down outward-bound as well city traffic. With the building of the first UER, those travelling through Wazirabad Bypass will be able to connect from NH-1, starting from Narela, Bawana and Tikri Kalan, to NH-10, moving to Mithrao-Bijwasan to NH-8 and Rajokari, without the need to travel through the congested roads of the national capital. It will have a total length of 57.24 kilometres. Â
Government officials said that the UER-I, connecting Wazirabad on Yamuna bank to Mahipalpur near the Indira Gandhi International Airport has been planned especially keeping in mind the air travelers from Punjab, Haryana, west Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.Â
Those travelling from Delhi to Rajasthan can also take this road to join NH-8. The union urban development minister Kamal Nath said that another road – UER-II – is being built to facilitate seamless travel for traffic, which will provide connectivity from Wazirabad Bypass to NH-1 via Rohini phase IV and V to NH-10 and via Mundka-Bakkarwala-Dichokalan-Najafgarh-Chawla-Dwaria to NH-8 and via Shivmurthi-Zone J to NH-2 up to Badarpur. With a length of 79.12 kilometres, this will be longest of all three roads. Â
A third UER has been planned to provide connectivity from Wazirabad Bypass to Bakhtawarpur -Badli-Rohini Phase-III-Begampur to NH-8 and will have a total length of 20.8 kilometres.
