Encouraged by the ‘phenomenal’voting percentage of women above 18 years of age in the last Delhi assembly polls, a whopping 80 per cent and much ahead of the overall turnout at 66 per cent, the DEO will kickstart this initiative from Saturday coinciding with Women’s Day celebrations across NCR.
Under this initiative, the DEO will hold a special function at every women’s college across the nine districts of the national capital and hand over voter’s card to students who have already applied for it. Besides, those who are yet to be enrolled on the voters’list will also be encouraged to do the same before 12 March, which is the last date of enrollment.
‘Officers will get forms filled by woman students and ensure that they receive their voter cards without any problems,’Delhi chief electoral officer Vijay Dev said, adding that the DEO will make sure that the electoral enrollment and turnout reach 100 per cent among women students during this polling season. ‘As a matter of fact, women electors were ahead in voting percentage in various age categories up to 50 years in the last assembly election. In 18-years-of-age category, their percentage was 80 per cent, whereas in 18 to 19-year-old category, it was 78 per cent,’he said.
‘They have made us proud because they contributed to democracy much more effectively than men,’Dev said. To ensure that each student has been enrolled in every college, the DEO will collaborate with colleges and ask school principals to issue a certificate stating all of them have been enrolled, Dev said, adding that students will be asked to pledge that they will cast their votes no matter what keeping in mind all the issues affecting them. Awareness activities to encourage enrollment and voting will also be arranged in every college.
The DEO also plans to present a special award to the college which secures the highest voting percentage in Lok Sabha election. There are 1,20,60,493 electors as per the final electoral roll published on 31 January 2014, comprising 66,84,476 male and 53, 76,017 female voters.
The gender ratio is 804 per 1000 as against 868 during the 2011 census. There are 2.26 lakh first-time voters who will cast their franchise in the 2014 general elections. They constitute two per cent of total electors.

The book titled Bapu Hamare Saath, written by Padma Shree awardee Reema Nanavaty of Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA), is on Mahatma Gandhi's philosophies and how his ideologies helped in empowering rural marginalised women. ‘I feel happy to release this book on the eve of International Women's day. SEWA is one organisation which has not only kept Mahatma Gandhi's philosophies alive but has also given a new direction towards women empowerment,’ said Kaur.
