Elderly couple electrocuted to death after water enters house

In a tragic incident, an elderly couple was electrocuted to death on early Monday after their house was flooded with the water logged in Gali No 6 in South-east Delhi’s Sangam Vihar area.

After heavy rainfall on late Sunday in the intervening night, the narrow lanes of Sangam Vihar were flooded with water. Apart from several potholes on the road, the drainage system failed and water logged in the area. As the height of the houses built in Sangam Vihar area is at the same level as that of the road, the water in the streets have entered the houses.

According to police, the one-room set of Deen Dayal (65) was flooded with water after the heavy rain on Sunday evening. After the rain stopped in the wee hours of Monday, Deen Dayal along with his wife — Dhanvati Devi (60) and their son (who lives with his wife and children right opposite the house of his parents) started throwing the water out of their house.

“The water level inside the house had gone upto 5 inches and with the help of utensils and buckets they were throwing the water out of their house. At around 4 am on Monday, their son went to sleep at his home and the couple too had slept after lowering the water level,” a police official said quoting the statement of thecouple’s son.

At around 6 am when Dhanvati woke up, she opened the refrigerator to take out milk kept inside to prepare morning tea. But the moment she opened the refrigerator she was electrocuted and fell on the ground. After hearing her screams, Deen Dayal woke up and in a bid to save her, he touched his wife and he too was electrocuted.

The locals along with the couple’s son gathered at the spot and the couple was rushed to the nearby hospital where the duo was declared dead on arrival. The post-mortem is likely to be conducted.
Meanwhile, the family of the couple and the locals have carried out a protest in the area demanding the solution to the waterlogging problem in the area.
