In a tragic incident in the wee hours of Monday, an elderly couple died when the wall of their old house collapsed in Central Delhi’s Chandni Mahal. The two were rushed to the hospital but were declared brought dead.
Rakesh Kumar (65) and Uma Gupta (60) were sleeping when early in the morning at around 6.30 am, the left wall of their old house suddenly collapsed. The duo were buried in the rubble and received severe injuries. The police were called by the neighbours and the family members that resided on the first floor of the 100-year-old building.
Even before the PCR call was made, the locals of the area tried to rescue the old couple. The PCR reached the spot and the two were taken to LNJP hospital but were declared brought dead by the doctors.
Rakesh and his wife were on the bed while their children slept on the mattress on the floor. The children escaped with minor injuries as the old couple took the major impact of the collapse.
“The incident happened early morning. Even the disaster management team reached the spot but the two could not be saved,” said a senior police officer. Rakesh had a spice shop in the Khari Baoli market in old Delhi. According to sources, the family resided for years in the old building. Rakesh and Uma are survived by two daughters and a 20-year-old son.
