In order to stop their march towards New Delhi demanding land reforms, Ekta Parishad activists have laid down the condition that government sign the agreement on the national land reform policy in Agra, where thousands of farmers are expected to reach on 11 October. 'We can resolve this issue with discussion, but I think agitation is not required' said rural development minister Jairam Ramesh.
This however, is the second time in recent days when the government has engaged with the activists of Ekta Parishad and has tried to persuade them to stop their march towards Delhi. Earlier Jairam Ramesh and union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had gone to Gwalior to persuade the activists to not march towards the Delhi, but they failed in their attempts.
Earlier in the day activists of Ekta Parishad met rural development minister Jairam Ramesh and made ten demands that need to be signed by the government of India. The main demands are that a national land reform policy should be formulated, fast track land tribunal, enhanced land access for poor marginalised and deprived landless farmers, home stead rights and a task force on land reforms will be formed.
