The cash-strapped civic body sealed the bank accounts of Delhi Police Training School, Delhi Police Public School, Department of Education, GTB Hospital, 46th Batallion CRPF and Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Handicapped for evading the property tax for many years. ‘We sent them many notices but the taxes were never paid. We had to take this step in order to get them to talk,’ said Sanjay Surjan, chairman of standing committee in EDMC.
The six bodies owe EDMC around Rs 26 crore in total. The Department of Education itself owes over Rs 15 crore as property tax to EDMC followed by Delhi Police Training School which owes around Rs 7.5 crore.
The civic body has also sent notices to six other government institutions — Delhi Transco Limited, Veterinary Hospital, Labour Commissioner, Directorate General of Health Services, Jagpravesh Chandra Hospital, LBS hospital — which owes them property tax amounting to crores of rupees.
‘We have sent the notice to six other bodies. If they don’t respond within a week or two, we’ll seal their bank accounts as well,’ said Surjan.
The Delhi Transco Limited is obligated to pay around Rs 177 crore as property tax to EDMC, more than the combined total of all the public institutes. The civic body would be richer by over Rs 200 crore, if it succeeds in recovering the long-pending property tax.
