EC directs candidates to submit details of social media accounts

Anyone contesting assembly elections will have to give an affidavit to the election commission noting details about their social media accounts and messaging services such as BBM, Whatsapp, etc. <span style="border-bottom: 1px solid #0000FF !important;text-decoration:underline !important;color:#0000FF !important">The Delhi election commission is the first to issue such social media guidelines.

‘After the implementation of model code of conduct it was an uphill task to control such high flow of messages online. We have now decided to track all such contents with the help of police,’ said Vijay Dev, Delhi chief electoral officer.

The commission will now ask the candidates to submit an affidavit at the time of filing nominations about their Facebook, Twitters and other social media accounts. <span style="border-bottom: 1px solid #0000FF !important;text-decoration:underline !important;color:#0000FF !important">Details of SIM card with <span style="border-bottom: 1px solid #0000FF !important;text-decoration:underline !important;color:#0000FF !important">Black Berry Messenger (BBM) pin, Whattsapp and other messaging services are also to be submitted.  ‘The candidates will also have to submit the expenditure on maintaining social media sites, personal websites and bulk messages. We will seek help of law enforcement agencies to scrutinise the content of messages or posts of the candidates,’ he added.
