Ebola watch: 24 equipment to be set up at airports

In an initiative aimed at keeping a tab on persons coming India from Ebola-hit countries, the Union Health Ministry has planned to set up 24 new thermal scanner equipment at international airports to check the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

Giving details of preparedness of ministry to check spread of Ebola, additional secretary Arun Kumar Panda said, ‘The government is ready with a foolproof plan to stop the spread of deadly disease in the country. Presently, there are 18 scanners at the international airports. The Centre is planning to add 24 new thermal scanner equipment to cover all international airports for checking all incoming passengers, especially those travelling from African destinations.’

‘More than 33,000 passengers have already been screened till 20 November with the help of the existing 18 thermal scanners,’ Panda said during a function on Thursday.

Emphasising the efficacy of the National Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC), Delhi and National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for disease control, the senior health official said, ‘Four new labs will be readied to scale up the capacity.’

‘The World Health Organisation recommends exit screening of passengers from the badly affected
countries, it does not recommend entry screening but we are doing the entry screening also,’ he said.
