After wrecking havoc in West African countries, it seems the life-threatening Ebola might have entered Delhi. According to a press note released on Tuesday, the union health ministry has confirmed that an Indian national returning from Liberia had been tested positive for the deadly virus. He has been quarantined at Delhi airport.
The note said, ‘The 26-year-old man, who reached here on 10 November, was already treated for the deadly disease in the African country and carried no symptoms.’ ‘The situation is under control and there is no need for any alarm. However, all precautions are being taken in this regard,’ ministry’s release added. He had carried a certificate of medical clearance from the Liberian government, officials added saying there’s no need to panic. Later on Tuesday night, Union Health Minister J P Nadda chaired an inter-ministerial review meeting on Ebola and directed for strengthening preparedness and response management.
Meanwhile, a 35-year-old man, who showed Ebola-like symptoms, was kept at an isolation ward at Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur before he left for Delhi.
‘The suspected patient (from Jaipur), identified as Mohammed Rehan Khan, was suffering from fever and blisters. He first reported to a private hospital last evening from where he was referred
to the medical ward at Sawai Man Singh Hospital,’ head of medicine department of the hospital Dr CL Naval said. The patient, who belongs to Vidhyadhar Nagar area in the city, had recently visited Vadodara.
A preliminary clinical investigation indicated that the patient had no contact with any other Ebola patient nor he travelled abroad, Naval added.
He had carried a certificate of medical clearance from the Liberian government, mentioning that ‘he has successfully undergone care and treatment related to Ebola and after post treatment assessment has been declared free of any clinical signs and symptoms and confirmed negative by laboratory analysis,’ the official statement said quoting the Liberian document.
