Eateries defy SDMC orders, continue to sell food inside Kotla

Defying the orders of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), the eateries and food establishments inside the Feroz Shah Kotla continued to serve food items during the IPL match on Monday even as the civic body had sealed all eating joints inside the stadium in the morning for failing to have health and trade license.

The municipal health and trade license from the concerned civic authority is mandatory for any outlet to operate from within the stadium.

During the inspection by a team of SDMC, the shortcomings came to light. It was found that the food establishments in the stadium were running under the ‘most insanitary and unhygienic condition’.
Manish Gupta, commissioner of SDMC said, ‘The food establishments in the stadium were operating under insanitary and unhygienic conditions posing severe risk to public’s health.

It was also found out that they were working without any health and trade license. Therefore, we had to seal the eateries.

Surprisingly, the issue only came to light when the team of SDMC officers inspected the venue following a minor fire incident at the stadium during the last IPL match on 3 May while the eateries have been operating for a considerable time now.

It seems that the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) have not taken the sealing orders by the civic body seriously and still carried on with their business.

The squabble between Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) and the SDMC is not new. The SDMC has alleged that DDCA owes property tax worth crores of rupees and does not even have a completion certificate for Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. Interestingly, the DDCA argues that it doesn’t own the property as no completion certificate has been given so far and hence no property tax can be levied on the property.

A senior civic official on condition of anonymity said that every year during the IPL, the DDCA approaches high court and gets a provisional certificate to carry on with their scheduled matches. It can be noted here that matches cannot be allowed at Feroz Shah Kotla without the completion certificate.
