East MCD identifies 4,600 tax defaulters; to act stern

Coming down heavily on property tax defaulters, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has decided to initiate penal action against them. The Corporation has prepared a list of nearly 4,600 defaulters, including government agencies under its jurisdiction that have not paid taxes for the last few years.

BB Tyagi, chairman of Standing Committee of the EDMC, said that notices have been issued against several government departments like Delhi Transco Limited, Power Grid, DDA, GTB Hospital, Northern Railways and a number of others as property taxes worth crores are due against them.

“Despite sending notices to them and approaching them many times, these organisations have not paid their property taxes so far, which on collection, would help improve the financial situation of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation,” said Tyagi.

He said that appeal has also been made to all property owners to pay up their property taxes at the earliest, unless already paid, else strict actions, including attachment of property, attachment of accounts and auction of property, could be undertaken.

“We have appealed to the owners to pay up the due money. We have decided to organise tax collection camps in various nooks and to keep open property tax offices on Saturdays, till last March 31,” added Tyagi.

The Corporation, which is not able to meet its expenses due to financial crunch, said that more than Rs 300 crore is due upon the defaulters and stern action might be taken to collect the amount. Apart from this, the Corporation has also asked the property owners to pay conversion charges for change in use from residential to commercial on notified mixed land roads.

The data provided by the East MCD revealed that property tax Rs 13. 66 crore is due upon Power Grid Corporation of India Limited; Rs 98.55 crore – DDA; Rs 14.63 crore – Directorate of Education; Rs 89 crore – Delhi Transco Limited; Rs 1.08 crore – Delhi Police; Rs 4.29 crore – Northern Railways; Rs 2.98 crore – GTB Hospital; Rs 61 lakh – DUSIB; Rs 55 lakh up on the Department of Post, apart from defaulters.
