East DM stresses need for road safety measures, holds meetings

In view of the ongoing road safety awareness campaign across the state, the East Delhi district administration on Wednesday held a meeting with all the unions of auto rickshaws, gramin sewas and taxis operating in the district. The administration stressed the need on road safety as majority of the accidents are happening in that area. The representatives of Bhartiya Majdoor Sangh, AITUC, INTUC and other 11 Taxi Unions attended the meeting.
The Delhi government Transport Department and the Delhi Police began the Road Safety Week with various initiatives organised across the Capital on Sunday. Similar events will continue till January 17. The Transport Department took to the air waves through a jingle on road safety apart from formally launching a media campaign giving the message of responsible driving. The police held a citizens’ meet at India Gate.
Addressing the participants, DM East, Kunal, stressed that in present scenario there is an urgent need to improve the image of auto and taxi drivers. He specified that the drivers must abide by traffic rules, and must maintain proper behaviour with commuters. “Every day many lives are lost and people become disabled due to road accidents. It affects families. But the tragedy can be prevented by spreading awareness about various aspects of road safety. Small steps like respecting traffic rules can go a long way in saving precious lives,” the DM added.
