East Delhiites have a new pet choice

This one goes to cow worshippers. If things go as East Delhi Municipal Corporations [EDMC] plans, they wouldn’t have to roam the streets in search of a cow to serve agrasan [the first food] to gau mata [the cow]. EDMC is promising a favourable licensing policy that would let east Delhiites to have cows as pets.

The councillors of EDMC on Monday got emotional at the House meeting and vowed to make ‘a cow in a house’ possible, provided the house has enough space and fulfil certain conditions.

‘The cow is considered sacred and some religious Hindus do not eat before giving agrasan to the cow. We must come up with a policy to allow to pet cows in residential areas with certain conditions,’ said Mehak Singh, Chairman of Standing Committee, EDMC. The prospective cow owners would have to pay a licence fee as well as fulfil conditions such as availability of space. They must also promise in writing that they would not leave the cows unattended on the roads and not throw cow dung in the drainage.

‘If we can allow pet dogs then why not cows, which have religious importance in our life?’ contended Singh. The matter was raised in the house during discussion by BJP councillor Manish Tyagi and was supported unanimously by the councillors cutting across the party lines.

Supporting the idea, the leader of the house Varyam Kaur said, ‘This is a good idea and a suitable licensing policy should be drafted to allow people to keep cows as pets.’

The members also expressed their concern on illegal slaughtering of animals in east Delhi and demanded the mayor to regularise it.

‘We have a slaughter house at Ghazipur in east Delhi, but it is unfortunate that cases of illegal slaughtering are increasing. The regularisation of illegal slaughtering will add to the revenue of the government and also provide relief to cows who have to face the cruelty on streets and even near temples,’ said Preeti Singh, Congress councillor. The members also alleged that the illegal slaughtering is being done in connivance with officials of the corporation.
