‘East Delhi to become a hub of quality health services’

Health Minister A K Walia claimed  on Monday that east Delhi would soon become a hub of quality health services as Rajiv Gandhi Super-speciality Hospital at Tahirpur would fully become functional in order to provide specialised healthcare services to the people of Delhi and the patients coming from other neighbouring states.

Apart from this, east Delhi already has GTB Hospital, NABH accredited Institute of Human Behaviourial Sciences, the Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI) and a Medical College & Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya. The government is also considering setting up of a dental college in east Delhi to make it a comprehensive healthcare hub in the area. Walia expressed these views in a function organised at DSCI to coincide with the celebration of World Cancer Day.

According to Walia, the DSCI which has earned a reputation of providing the world-class treatment facility in the field of cancer has been catering to the needs of more than 10,000 new patients every year. The institute has been able to earn the NABH accreditation in shortest duration. The government is keen to develop it as an internationally famous cancer institute.

The city government has given its nod for installing the latest protone-therapy accelerator costing Rs 400 crore. The PT accelerator facility would be the first such in the South Asia. Walia added that there would be no dearth of funds for expansion of facilities and addition of the latest cancer related equipment. Soon it is expected to have the facilities like surgical, HDR Brachytherapy, ICU, and bone marrow transplant. While commending the commitment of the doctors and technicians in the institute, Walia stated that the institute has also been catering to the needs of around 60 per cent patients coming from outside Delhi.

Walia also stated that the health department has decided to expand DSCI. One of its branches will soon be commissioned at Janakpuri whereas two other branches would be opened in north and south districts. The government would also ensure allotment of additional land for DSCI to make space for more wards and operation theatres. The government has set up the modern and advanced hospitals and institutes out of which five have been granted NABH accreditation.

Speaking on this occasion, Jaiprakash Aggarwal , Member of Parliament, east Delhi, stated that the institute must try to extend free treatment to more people. Aggarwal also expressed confidence that with due awareness the cases of cancer would become lesser.
