East Delhi Municipal Corporation (East DMC) is planning to introduce e-garbage collection system by installing GPS in garbage collection trucks and auto-trippers in its area.
‘The GPS system will enable us to monitor the movement of trucks directly from the control room of headquarters, which will put an end to record fudging,’ said Mahak Singh, chairman of standing committee, East DMC.
‘Real time monitoring of garbage collection and disposal would also increase the efficiency and restore confidence of citizens in the municipal system,’ added Singh while approving Rs 1.92 crore for the project.
The scheme is being implemented on built own and operate (BOO) model and a concessionaire Virgo Softech has been selected to implement the project.
According to the officers of the sanitation department, the corporation has just inducted a fleet of 30 new trucks for garbage collection to replace its old fleet. ‘In the first phase the GPS system would be installed in the new trucks and soon the entire fleet of trucks, small trucks, tractors and auto-trippers will be covered,’ added Singh. The corporation claims to collect and dispose over 1,900 MT of municipal waste from East DMC area nearing the complete disposal of garbage in the nearby Ghazipur land fill. The corporation will induct 40 new trucks in this year in its garbage collection fleet.
The concessionaire has been given the responsibility for the supply, installation, testing, commissioning, operation and maintenance of ‘e-garbage collection system’ for three years.
According to senior officers of the corporation, there are 70 old trucks, 125 auto-tippers, over 50 tractors, and privately owned small trucks for garbage collection. ‘We have started the scheme of door to door garbage collection and the results are very encouraging. Soon we will achieve the garbage collection and disposal target,’ said spokesperson of East DMC.
