The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders have requested the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) VS Sampath to introduce a system to allow Non Resident Indians (NRIs) to cast their ballot in the forthcoming general elections on Wednesday.
A team of BJP delegates met Sampath at his office and sought a method to allow the NRIs to vote through postal ballot or voting at an Indian Mission abroad or through online voting. Earlier, NRIs were given voting rights in 2010 through an amendment in the Representation of People Act, 1951.
Following the amendment, NRIs can cast their vote ‘physically’ only after registering themselves in electoral rolls of their respective constituencies.
Party leaders claimed that millions of Indian community living abroad finds it difficult to travel to India at the same time of voting.
