DUTA calls off admission boycott

Facing all round criticism, the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) called off the admission boycott on Tuesday. Decision to this regard was taken in a General Body Meeting (GBM) held on the campus. However, the evaluation boycott for graduation first and second year will be in place.

A section of teachers had protested against the teachers’ protest in the University. Also, several students’ union including the Akhi Bhartiyta Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had carried out a protest against the agitating teachers.

Democratic Teachers Front’s (DTF) head Nandita Narayan said: “Teachers’ communities are
responsible and concerned of students, therefore it is decided to call off the admission boycott.”
However, several teachers’ body opposing the decision has given a call for the continuation of the admission boycott.

The teachers have already boycotted checking of examination papers of graduation first and second years. The boycott started on May 24, a few days after the evaluation had started.

The teachers are protesting against UGC’s notification that will, teachers say, bring down the number of teaching positions by 50 per cent with ‘unreasonable’ terms of promotion and workload.

The DU teachers were divided over the boycott of evaluation and admission process since May 24 in protest against the new UGC norms to ascertain their academic performance. Also, a section of teachers on Monday had opposed publicly on Facebook and Twitter the move saying it
may jeopardise the careers of students.

“Delay in the result of first and second year students will also hamper the workload adjustments and calculations as this will be required to make a case for continuation of ad-hoc teachers. Teachers decided to give a call to other fellows to start participating in the admission and evaluation process,” statement from a group of 200 faculty members said.
