DUSU still striking over online registrations

On Sunday, the fourth day of the indefinite hunger strike called by the Delhi University Student Union [DUSU] demanding free online registration, MP Deepender Singh Hooda met the DUSU president Ajay Chikara.

According to the DUSU, by now nearly 53,000 online applications have been registered. And of these applicants, merely 2,500 students have remitted the registration fees. The majority who have registered have not been able to proceed with the remittance of online registration fees due to various problems inherent in the existing online admission process.

DUSU has raised questions regarding the transparency in the admission procedure. ‘The online admission procedure seems to be non transparent. The admission prospects of the majority of the students who have registered online, but not able to submit the registration fees are not clear. Will the university cancel their registration as void?’ ask the members of DUSU. DUSU also questioned feasibility of pricing the online applications more than the offline forms, which is priced at Rs 20.

According to Delhi University Teachers Association [DUTA], the demand of the DUSU is absolutely justified as there’s a serious goof-up in online registration.

DUTA said ‘The system accept the forms even before the payment is made. As a result, thousands of forms have been shown as accepted while only a few have deposited the fee online. This serious lapse on the part of the university is going to deny the right of admission to thousands of students.’

Amar Deo Sharma, president of DUTA, added that ‘online registration does not entail any expenditure on the part of the university. This kind of functioning defies all logic and common sense.’

According to him, ‘DUTA would extend its fullest support to the genuine cause of the students, it condemns the vice-chancellor in unequivocal terms for his inhuman attitude.’

Sources said ‘the student union is urging the university administration to intervene as early as possible to sort out the matter, failure of which would invite severe consequences for the university. Student union members of various colleges have extended their support for the strike’.

Both DUTA and DUSU want the vice-chancellor resolve the matter.
