DUSU protests rising prices in varsity canteens

Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) and Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Monday held protests against private canteens in the varsity, alleging that prices in the canteen are too steep for students. Under the leadership of Aman Awana, president, DUSU and Raju Rawat, joint secretary, DUSU, students marched to the IRCTC canteen at Arts Faculty first to protest against the prices of that canteen.

Amann Awana, DUSU President, demanded this Nirula outlet be shut immediately and rates in the IRCTC canteen be reduced immediately.

‘The DU administration is promoting commercialisation in the campus and this will not be accepted. We will fight for the right of students to have less expensive food in the canteens on campus. When smaller canteen owners can serve good food at low prices in various college canteens and a canteen exclusively for employees can serve food at such cheap rates, why can’t these bigger canteens serve food at correct and affordable prices? Why is the university so keen on giving space, which belongs to the varsity, to run these commercialised outlets, which a majority of students cannot afford? Are university officials getting benefits by providing this space to such outlets is also a question?’

Later on these student leaders met the dean of Students’ Welfare (DSW) and proctor, demanding immediate action on this issue. They have demanded a written reply from the DSW in 24 hours, failing which this agitation will be taken to the college level and eventually a university strike will follow. The DSW and Proctor assured students that they will take steps soon to resolve the issue.
