‘To get the ticket of the president, Gaurav Tushir has to get admission in first year. So, he got enrolled in first year again in Motilal College despite having completed his under-graduation in BA programme from Hansraj College. If he would have been in second or third year, he would have got the ticket for the post of vice-president or secretary. Chances for president’s ticket would have reduced,’ said a source. Gaurav Tushir is contesting for the post of president from National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
Taking admission in under-graduation is one of the tactics used by candidates. Another popular tactics which is continuing in DUSU polls is using ‘AAA’ in front of the name of the candidate so as to get the preferred ballet number.
According to a source, the use of aaa or AAA is actually useful. Since students just caste their votes without actually focussing on candidate, so this helps. Students who are not keen in DUSU elections caste their votes according to first or second name they see on EVM machine.
This year, both the candidates of NSUI and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for presidential post have used ‘aaa’ in front of their name — ‘a.a. Gaurav Tushir ‘ and ‘a.a.a Mohit Nagar’ respectively. In total, seven candidates have been practicing this tactic.
‘If a person wants to change his or her name through legal process , then what’s the problem? AISA thinks students don’t use their minds while voting. They should come out of their illusion,’ said Rohit Chahal, national secretary of ABVP.
