Very soon students of BTech (Humanities) under Cluster Innovation Center of Delhi University, will council Delhi police officers on the use of sign language which will help them in understanding the problems faced by hearing impaired women in the city.
Sukrita Paul Kumari, coordinator of the programe, told Millennium Post, ‘It is mandatory for students of the first semester to prepare a module and understand sign language through research work to help them in understanding the problems such as physical harassment and domestic violence faced by women who cannot hear.’
It has been found that women face difficulty in registering police complaints with the police if they cannot hear. A new module prepared by the B.Tech (Humanities) students will help the police in understanding sign language to overcome this problem.
A senior DU official said: ‘Deaf women suffer a very high rate of problems. Abuse and domestic violence in relationships faced by hearing impaired women are frequently overlooked, discounted, tolerated or accepted because the abuse is not readily apparent to outsiders. Such women find it even more difficult to deal with the police and court systems.’
