DU students’ joy travel turns sour

Many students of the University of Delhi has decided to embark on a journey of learning and fun on a special train to Jaisalmer a few days back, but now it has turned out to be a trip to hospital for a lot of them.

Over 250 students of the university fell ill on Wednesday due to suspected food poisoning and other ailments at their camp in Jaisalmer. According to sources, 'Around 80 students were hospitalised and 160 were given primary treatment outdoors in the Jawahar hospital. Around 900 Delhi university students went there on the educational and motivational tour Gyanodaya. Over 200 of them took ill after they consumed contaminated food on Tuesday night.' Gyanodaya is pet project of the Delhi university vice chancellor Dinesh Singh.

Prof. C S Dubey, the head of the tour committee, tried to downplay the incident. He said, 'The students have suffered due to dehydration, rather than food poisoning . He also claimed that number of students facing the problem has been exaggerated.' He added, 'The situation is completely under control, and ORS powder and other medicines were being supplied to the students.'

The suspected case of food poisoning came to light early morning when the students started vomiting and complained of abdominal pain. A student who is currently at the camp said on the condition of anonymity, 'It all happened after we returned from a visit to the border, which is about 40 kilometres away from the camp. It is suspected that the food students were served on the return was contaminated. Local authorities sent a team to the camp site to collect food samples.'

The group of students reached Bikaner on 30 September and were in Jaisalmer on Tuesday to see the working of the Indian Army and the Air Force at the border.
