DU students face language barrier

Delhi University (DU) students who had opted for Hindi as the medium of study, have started feeling the pinch because of an acute shortage of study material in Hindi in the university libraries.

A DU official who did not wish to be named said, ‘There are around 4,000 books on various subjects in Hindi in the central library, Faculty of Arts, north campus. Less than 1,500 books in Hindi are available in the Ratan Tata Library.’ Mohamad Kuddush, a final year masters student in Political Science at Zakir Hussain College said, ‘Often, we have to translate English study material into Hindi and then study. There is an acute shortage of books in Hindi.’ He added, ‘Last year, Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Singh had assured students that he will find a solution to the problem, and if needed, get the available books translated in to Hindi. No such thing has happened yet.’

Three days ago, the National Students Union of India (NSUI) had also claimed that English medium students were doing better in exams as compared to Hindi medium students. The Union had claimed that the university was discriminating against students on the basis of language and that it was a matter of grave concern. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad had also initiated action to inform the authorities about the shortage of books in Hindi in the library.

Hindi medium students who did not wish to be named complained that the teachers were not concerned about their problem. ‘More than 121 students out of the 191 Hindi-medium masters students had to repeat exams.’

Amrish Ranjan Pandey, NSUI spokesperson, said this was not the first time that Hindi-medium students failed their exams.
