DU student shot dead, protest causes jam

Death of a  21-year-old Delhi University student, Manish Singh Chaudhary, is bringing the worst in Delhiites. The student was shot dead and three others  have been critically injured, including the deceased father. The locals from Chaudhary’s neighbourhood, Patel Nagar area, rallied together to protest against this atrocity,  causing a huge traffic jam. They insist that the accused often bullied innocent people.

The incident was reported from Patel Nagar area of central Delhi at about 9.45 pm on Thursday night. The victim, Chaudhary, was a second year student of Moti Lal Nehru college and was residing in the area along with his family.

According to the police, late Thursday night Chaudhary,  along with his brother Ankush, was enjoying ice-cream near Ranjit Nagar area. A local goon, identified as  Jaat Jaat, along with his friend Rahul Chaudhary began bullying the duo. When the brothers protested, they both were pushed inside the car and were allegedly assaulted by the accused. When the brothers  managed to escape, they complained to their parents.

‘The accused were well-known to them so the parents, along with the victims and some neighbours, went to Jaat Jaat’s home in Patel Nagar area. In the ensuing argument, Jaat lost his control and shot Chaudhary dead. The victim received two gun shots on his neck and one in his heart. He died on the spot,’ said a senior police official.

The police also said that Jaat’s mother, Saroj, let her dogs loose on the protesting neighbours. chaudhary’s father, Rajbir, was also beaten up. Meanwhile, Jaat, fired in the air and tried to flee from the scene. But he was nabbed by the locals. His friend, Rahul Chaudhary has been absconding since then.

‘After the police was informed about the incident by some passersby, the injured were taken to the nearby BL Kapoor hospital where Manish was pronounced dead on arrival. The  others are  undergoing treatment,’ the official said.

Deevesh Srivastav, Additional Commissioner of Police (central), who visited the crime spot, said, ‘We have arrested Saroj from her residence and Jaat was already nabbed by the locals. Jaat received many injuries on his body so as soon as he’s discharged, he will be formally arrested. Both have been interrogated by us to find out the possible hide-outs of Rahul. We will soon nab him. A case under the sections- 302, 307 and 323 of the Indian Penal Code have been lodged at Ranjit Nagar police station in central Delhi.’

Meanwhile, a protest was carried out by the locals as they alleged that the accused, used to beat up innocent people routinely. As a result, there was a heavy traffic jam near Patel Nagar Metro station for about three hours on Friday afternoon. ‘The duo have been known to be criminally active in that area,’ the official added.
