A 26-year-old Delhi University (DU) M.Phil student was thrashed by the public when a robber snatched his mobile phone and tried to pretend as a victim. The accused projected the ‘partially blind’ student as the accused.
According to the police, the incident took place on Friday night when the student, Shakir, was returning to his hostel in the North campus from the Mukherjee Nagar area on foot. Three men riding a motorbike allegedly waylaid him and snatched his mobile phone. While the trio was trying to flee, Shakir intercepted their motorbike and they fell on the road, police said. He overpowered one of the accused, identified as Vijay Gupta, a resident of Burari. Gupta’s other two accomplices – Dheeraj and Pappu –managed to escape on the motorbike, police said.
“When residents gathered, Gupta told them that Shakir has snatched his mobile phone and was beating him. The public then thrashed Shakir, who has received injuries on his face and other parts of his body. But when Gupta tried to flee, the public smelt something foul and nabbed him,” said a police official. They also informed the police, who have detained Gupta. Based on Shakir’s statement, a case under sections of the IPC has been registered at the Mukherjee Nagar police station.
